Italy's Circumvesuviana railway clears first new train for service

The Ente Autonomo Volturno (EAV) announced that Stadler has received authorization from ANSFISA to place the first newly built train on the Circumvesuvian line in service. After about twenty months of technical checks and administrative procedures, the “Taylor‑made” convoy, designed specifically for the 950 mm gauge of the network, will begin operating in the coming weeks.

EAV plans to have all twelve new units running by the end of 2026 and to expand the fleet to 46 trains by 2027. The modernised rolling stock is equipped for both the existing signalling system and the European Train Control System (ETCS) currently being installed by Alstom, and is expected to raise safety, comfort and digitalisation levels to European standards in line with Italy’s PNRR objectives.

The project involves several partners, including Stadler, Alstom, Hitachi, Certifer, Rina and the testing authority ANSFISA, and has been described by EAV’s administrator Umberto De Gregorio as a “historic and hard‑won” step for regional mass rapid transport.
