Overview

In late June 2026 EAV announced that Stadler’s first new Circumvesuviana train had cleared ANSFISA and would enter service within weeks. After about twenty months of technical checks, the custom‑built unit for the 950 mm gauge is part of a fleet renewal aiming for twelve new trains by the end of 2026 and a larger batch by 2027.

Commuter groups shortly thereafter issued an open letter condemning frequent breakdowns, delays and a reduced experimental timetable, demanding a restored schedule from September.

On 1 August 2026 the first new Stadler train (type Etr301) began operating on the Volla‑Baiano line, providing four daily trips. The launch coincided with extensive summer upgrades funded by the PNRR, which saw night extensions on Metro Line 1 suspended, station closures on Line 2 and limited service on Line 6. The new train is roughly 40.9 m longer than existing units, raising platform‑length issues, and only three to four drivers are currently certified, prompting calls for additional training. Officials highlighted that the renewal programme now targets delivery of 56 new units by the end of 2027.

The rollout continues to balance modernization goals, infrastructure constraints and passenger expectations as the region works toward full fleet replacement while managing temporary service reductions.
