Italian Minister Nello Musumeci Says Safety Cannot Be Guaranteed at Campi Flegrei Volcano

Minister for Civil Protection Nello Musumeci told the Chamber of Deputies that, on an active volcano such as Campi Flegrei, no one can guarantee safety; the government can only work to reduce exposure to risk. He expressed solidarity with the 85,000 residents affected by recent seismic events, noting that the intervention area covers about 15,000 buildings and that many people have been forced to leave homes that are now uninhabitable.

Musumeci said the government is ready for any proposals from Parliament and acknowledged the difficulty of finding simple solutions. He also pointed out that a national emergency has not been declared, leaving coordination of operational plans unclear. Local mayors, including Bacoli’s Josi Della Ragione, have criticised the minister’s approach, demanding concrete actions and accusing the government of politicising the crisis.

The minister reiterated that the region’s volcanic behavior remains unpredictable and that improving building resilience is possible, but absolute safety cannot be assured.
