Italy's Court of Cassation orders new trial for Impagnatiello
Italy's Court of Cassation has ordered a new trial for Alessandro Impagnatiello, the former bartender convicted of murdering his pregnant partner, Giulia Tramontano, in May 2023. The supreme court's decision follows an appeal by the Milan General Prosecutor's Office, which sought to include the aggravating factor of premeditation—an element that was excluded during the previous appeals court ruling.
Investigations revealed that Impagnatiello had planned the crime for months. Evidence suggests he had been searching for information online since December 2022 and had previously administered rat poison to Tramontano in an attempt to induce a miscarriage. The murder, which occurred in their apartment in Senago near Milan, involved 37 stab wounds. Prosecutors highlighted the use of a pre-selected weapon and the removal of a rug as key indicators of a planned ambush.
The victim was seven months pregnant at the time of her death. While Impagnatiello had previously received a life sentence, the recognition of premeditation in the upcoming trial marks a significant legal development for the victim's family and the prosecution.
