Italy's electricity prices near double those of France and Spain

Italy's 2025 wholesale electricity price (PUN) averaged 115.9 €/MWh, almost twice the levels recorded in France (61.1 €/MWh) and Spain (65.3 €/MWh). The gap is attributed to Italy's continued reliance on natural gas for power generation, which makes the market sensitive to international gas price swings and geopolitical tensions.

In the week of 29 June–5 July, the Italian electricity market saw a modest price decline, with the GME PUN index falling to 134.85 €/MWh from 144.67 €/MWh the previous week. Trading volume reached 5.7 million MWh, representing 85.6 % market liquidity. Regional price variation persisted, with Sardinia posted the lowest average (130.04 €/MWh) and the North‑Central area the highest (135.22 €/MWh). These figures illustrate both the volatility of Italy's electricity costs and the ongoing competitive pressure from neighboring markets.
