Italy's emergency departments grapple with medical staff shortages

In Chiaravalle Centrale, the local health house is operating with only nurses on some shifts because two of the three allocated doctors have left, prompting the activist group Potere al Popolo to demand immediate intervention by the regional health authority (ASP) to restore full medical coverage.

At the Perrino Hospital, the director of general services acknowledged the broader, nationwide shortage of medical personnel that affects many Italian emergency rooms. He explained that unexpected sick leaves among senior doctors temporarily altered the planned 3‑4‑3 night‑shift pattern, but the hospital re‑organized shifts to a 3‑3‑2 schedule, maintaining continuous patient care despite the staffing constraints.
