Italy's Emilia‑Romagna reports rise in workplace injuries and occupational diseases

The CGIL permanent observatory for workplace accidents and occupational diseases in Emilia Romagna shows a worsening trend for January–May 2026. Region‑wide, 33,837 injuries were reported, a rise of 2,026 cases (+7.5%) over the same period in 2025, including 28 fatal incidents (down from 29). Occupational diseases climbed to 4,138, up 19.1% from 3,474 the previous year.

In the province of Modena, May 2026 saw a 4.5% increase in reported injuries. Agriculture injuries rose from 162 to 184, while industry and services went from 4,506 to 4,655. The age group 15‑40 recorded the largest jump, from 2,418 to 2,635 cases. Reports of occupational diseases in Modena surged 54.8%, from 294 to 455, with agriculture cases climbing from 20 to 36 and industry/services from 273 to 411. Notable increases were seen in nervous‑system disorders (29 to 48) and musculoskeletal/connective‑tissue conditions (218 to 344).

Union representative Aurora Ferrari warned that "more than three workers die each day in Italy and injury cases are rising, including heat‑related incidents," urging stronger public investment in prevention, training for workers and employers, and hiring of inspection staff.
