Italy's Energy Minister Gilberto Pichetto targets nuclear start by 2033‑34

Environment and Energy Security Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin said Italy plans to have nuclear power operational by 2033‑2034. Speaking at the Forum in Masseria, he described the move as a political choice to integrate domestic energy production rather than replace existing sources, aiming to reduce reliance on foreign imports.

The government began a detailed analysis two years ago and has drafted legislation that was approved by the Chamber of Deputies. The bill is expected to become law within weeks, followed by a set of implementing decrees. Pichetto highlighted Italy's industrial capabilities, noting the country ranks after France in Europe for nuclear expertise and can contribute technology and skilled workforce worldwide.
