Italy's Energy Minister Pichetto Fratin backs nuclear power, referendum by 2029

Environment and Energy Security Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin said Italy could hold a referendum on reviving nuclear power between 2028 and 2029, describing nuclear energy as "green" and capable of lowering household electricity bills by roughly 15‑20%. He stressed that a popular vote would provide democratic legitimacy and called for transparent, data‑driven public information.

Fratin also reaffirmed the government's commitment to renewable sources, especially offshore wind, noting that the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan targets 131 GW of renewable capacity by 2030 (about 80 GW from solar and 28 GW from wind). He acknowledged current obstacles for wind projects, such as local opposition and lengthy permitting processes, and said the ministry is working to simplify approvals and boost incentives.

The minister highlighted Italy’s strong nuclear manufacturing expertise – the country remains the second‑largest in Europe for nuclear equipment and has built recent reactors abroad – while pointing out that Italy currently relies on imported nuclear electricity from France and that 40 % of its electricity comes from gas, with roughly 80 % of overall energy needs met by imports.
