Italy’s Foreign Ministry mitigates cyberattack on official website

Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that its website was targeted by a cyberattack on the morning of October 8. The ministry stated that its protection systems successfully mitigated the attack, preventing any service disruptions.

Authorities are currently monitoring the situation in coordination with the Polo Strategico Nazionale and other competent agencies. Analysts are also reviewing the websites of Italian embassies and consulates worldwide to determine if similar attempts have been made against diplomatic sites abroad.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani emphasized that cybersecurity has been a central component of the ministry’s recent reforms, which aimed to strengthen prevention, monitoring, and response capabilities. In response to the incident, Italy is collaborating with Romania and other European Union member states to propose mechanisms within upcoming EU meetings to formally designate actors responsible for cyberattacks targeting European institutions.
