Italy's heatwave devastates lagoon ecosystems, vineyards and bee colonies

In the Veneto Delta, aquaculture and lagoon managers reported water temperatures soaring to 32 °C, triggering massive algal blooms and severe anoxia that threatened the Delta’s lagoon environment, mollusk farms and local fisheries. Coldiretti fishing representative Alessandro Faccioli warned of irreversible damage to the lagoon’s biodiversity and demanded urgent revitalisation measures.

In Sardinia’s Castiadas, an extreme heat wave with peaks near 48 °C killed an entire bee colony at the Apicoltura Sa Domu de S'Abi farm and caused extensive damage to nearby vineyards. Mayor Eugenio Murgioni announced a request for a natural‑disaster declaration and urged regional authorities and water‑management bodies to develop concrete, long‑term solutions to the escalating heat emergency.
