Italy’s institutional reforms spark debate over shooting range closures and provincial election methods
Regional councilor Stefano Valdegamberi of Verona appealed to preserve historic sections of the National Shooting Federation (UITS) after a decree amendment (article 8) threatened to centralise resources, allow private management and jeopardise the economic sustainability of many shooting ranges, risking their closure after more than a century of service.
In the nearby Alpine province of Sondrio, the Popolari Retici movement urged the Lombardy regional government to restore direct voting for the provincial president and council, citing a recent reform in Friuli‑Venezia Giulia that reinstated universal suffrage. The group argues that the current indirect system, where mayors and municipal councillors elect provincial bodies, is unsuitable for mountainous territories and calls for a “strong and authoritative” representation to address local needs.
