Italy's IT‑Wallet digital ID platform reaches 10 million users

The IT‑Wallet, the digital identity wallet embedded in the IO app, has surpassed 10 million activations and now stores more than 20 million documents, including driver's licences, health cards and European disability cards. By early 2026 the service aims to support over 200 credentials such as study certificates, ISEE, residence attestations and electoral cards, aligning with the EU eIDAS 2 regulation and the European digital identity wallet.

At the same time, the public SPID system that many Italians use to access online services will begin charging a €6 annual fee from 2026, signalling a shift toward consolidating digital identity around the IT‑Wallet and the electronic identity card. The stored documents have legal validity and can be presented offline to authorities. The government has also extended the validity of paper identity cards to avoid rush‑hour demand before the electronic ID card is introduced, expected within a year.
