Minister Calderone presents Italy's strengthened workplace safety plan

Minister of Labour and Social Policies Marina Elvira Calderone said that “every injury, every occupational disease, every episode of exploitation is a wound that hits the individual worker and their family, but also the entire national community.” She stressed that health and safety at work are key indicators of a nation’s social development.

Calderone outlined a four‑pillar strategy – spreading a culture of prevention, strengthening training, enhancing vigilance and rewarding firms that invest in safety. The 2025 report marked a turning point, consolidating prior actions and introducing Decree Law 159 to reinforce national health‑and‑safety policies.

Inspections rose sharply, from about 100 000 checks in 2022 to over 157 000 in 2025, while the Labour Inspectorate’s audit activities more than doubled from 63 571 to 130 579 in the same period. The minister emphasised a shift from a post‑incident model to one focused on prevention, training and technological innovation, noting a modest regression in fatal accidents but urging further reductions.

She called for continuous commitment from institutions, companies, unions and workers, and announced extensions of the credit‑licence system and the introduction of a construction‑site badge for immediate inspection access.
