Italy's Marine Biodiversity Initiatives Target Youth Education and Sustainable Tourism

Marevivo is expanding marine‑biodiversity education through its NauticinBlu project, which reached about 1,700 students in 28 Italian nautical schools and 650 students in three European cities in 2025/26. Activities include classroom lessons, beach clean‑ups, visits to marine protected areas and workshops on blue‑economy jobs. Two students delivered a “Carta per la tutela della biodiversità” to President Sergio Mattarella, emphasizing the need to protect marine ecosystems as part of Italy’s ecological transition.

In the island of Procida, the Blue Governance 2030 plan, devised by local mariner Gennaro Cibelli, proposes a network of designated moorings and buoys to limit indiscriminate anchoring on sensitive habitats such as Posidonia oceanica. The scheme aims to balance recreational sailing, tourism revenue and marine‑environment protection within the Regno di Nettuno marine protected area, promoting participatory governance and technological monitoring.

Both initiatives reflect a broader European push to safeguard marine biodiversity while fostering sustainable tourism and youth involvement in ocean stewardship.
