Italy sports officials highlight benefits of major events amid Olympic legacy concerns

Mario Pozzi, head of the technical secretariat for the Italian Ministry of Sport and Youth, stated at the 66th Genoa Boat Show that investing in major sporting events is a successful strategy for boosting local economies and increasing sports participation. He highlighted that during the week of the preliminary regatta in Naples, the Italian Sailing Federation recorded a 17% increase in members in the Campania region, primarily among children under 14.

Pozzi noted that the economic impact of the America’s Cup was a decisive factor in Italy's bid to host the 38th edition. He emphasized that the government's goal is to use such events to grow specific sports, such as sailing, as a long-term legacy.

Separately, reports regarding the aftermath of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics indicate significant infrastructure challenges. A report by the Open Olympics 2026 network notes that while the sporting objectives were met, the project faces rising costs and delays. Of the 3.62 billion euros mapped for works, only about 25% of interventions are completed, with many projects facing delays of over seven months and some estimated to continue until 2033.
