Italian sports investment and Olympic legacy management

Overview

Italian sports officials are addressing the long-term economic and visibility impacts of major sporting events. Mario Pozzi of the Italian Ministry of Sport and Youth noted that hosting events like the America’s Cup can boost local economies and increase participation, citing a 17% rise in sailing membership in the Campania region following a Naples regatta. However, concerns remain regarding the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, where reports indicate rising costs and significant infrastructure delays, with some projects potentially extending until 2033.

In addition to infrastructure and economic concerns, officials are focusing on the media challenges of the Olympic cycle. During a conference organized by CONI Marche, experts discussed the difficulty of maintaining public interest in Olympic disciplines between Games. Fabio Luna, President of CONI Marche, emphasized the necessity of sustaining news coverage throughout the four-year cycle to prevent the drastic drop in media attention that typically follows the Olympic closing ceremonies.
