Taranto municipality faces delays and suspension in electronic ID card rollout

The municipal offices of Taranto warn that their decentralized Demographic Service locations are under pressure to process the roughly 10,000 electronic identity cards (CIE) needed before the national deadline of 3 August 2026, when paper cards must be replaced. The CISL FP union stresses a lack of staff, training, and equipment, calling for an extraordinary organisational plan.

At the same time, the city announced a temporary suspension of CIE issuance across all offices due to a centralised technical fault affecting the Ministry of the Interior’s platforms. Only two post‑stations at Palazzo Zanca will remain open for urgent requests while technicians work to restore full service.
