Italy's New Mountain Law to Boost Alpine Communities

Minister for Regional Affairs and Autonomies Roberto Calderoli met on 23 July in Berzo Demo with the mayor, the president of the Union of Municipalities of Valsavia, and leaders of the Valle Camonica mountain community. The gathering focused on Italy's newly approved *Legge per la Montagna*, which will come into force on 22 July with an implementing decree that defines which municipalities qualify for the measures.

The law targets disadvantaged mountain territories, offering incentives such as baby‑bonus payments, housing grants, health and school support, as well as funding for businesses and young entrepreneurs in agriculture and livestock. Officials said the aim is to make the mountains viable places to live and work, countering demographic decline and depopulation in areas like Valle Camonica and parts of the Sebino basin.

The event was attended by several mayors, local administrators and citizens who participated in a session titled “The Mountain of the Future: Reflections in Valle Camonica on the Law, Incentives and Perspectives.”
