Italy's Parliament Resumes Debate on Caregiver Family Law

On 1 July the Chamber of Deputies reopened discussions on legislation recognising family caregivers, examining fourteen draft bills that would grant legal, pension and economic rights to those who care for non‑self‑sufficient relatives. The Coordinamento Nazionale Caregiver Familiari Uniti, represented by regional coordinator Monica Di Filippo, urged lawmakers to adopt a substantive reform rather than a symbolic acknowledgement, stressing that caregivers – over seven million nationwide, most of them women – need full pension contributions, sick‑pay and recognition of care work as a social activity.

The parliamentary commission, chaired by Deputy Ugo Cappellacci, is reviewing the proposals amid concerns that the current draft limits financial support to €400 per month for low‑income families and fails to address core protections. Civil society is mobilising a national petition and testimonies from families in Molise, the country’s second‑oldest region, to push for concrete rights and dignified assistance for caregivers.
