Italy's plasma-derived drug sector remains strategically vital

Francesco Carugi, president of the Farmindustria Emoderivati Group, has highlighted the strategic importance of plasma-derived drugs in Italy. These life-saving biological medicines are produced by processing human plasma donated by volunteers.

In Italy, approximately 80% of the plasma collected through the national self-sufficiency system is allocated to companies for fractionation to produce these drugs, while 20% is reserved for emergencies. The sector has seen significant growth, with over 900,000 kilograms of plasma collected in recent years. These medicines, which include immunoglobulins, human albumin, and coagulation factors, are essential for treating rare diseases that often lack alternative therapies.

Despite an advanced national system and legislation aimed at total self-sufficiency, current domestic plasma collection is insufficient to meet the entire national demand. To ensure continuous therapeutic availability for patients, companies utilize a secondary supply channel, sourcing plasma from the United States and other European countries.
