Italy's PNRR projects see Mantova water network completed and Sicilian works under scrutiny

A water supply upgrade in the province of Mantova has been completed under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The project, coordinated by the provincial Office of Scope, cost over €32 million, with about €28 million funded by the PNRR. It modernised more than 2,600 km of distribution network, installed 60,000 smart meters, created 203 water districts and added 324 monitoring devices, replacing roughly 30 km of pipe and refurbishing 1,154 customer connections.

In the Sicilian town of Misterbianco, councilor Igor Nastasi of the PD party has raised concerns about the progress of PNRR‑funded works. He warned that the deadline of 30 June 2026 must be met or the municipality could lose €32 million in funding. Nastasi has called for on‑site inspections and demanded detailed information on the works’ status, costs, contracts and any delays, citing a lack of transparency from the local administration.

Both cases highlight the implementation and oversight challenges of Italy’s large‑scale PNRR infrastructure programme.
