On 29 July, local activists organised a demonstration in front of the Museum of Boats near Lake Nemi to oppose a cement‑based construction project and broader tourist‑ification plans for the lake’s shoreline. They reported that the water level of Lake Nemi has dropped 43 cm in the past four months – a loss of more than 600 million litres – while nearby Lake Albano has fallen 34 cm, equivalent to about 2.2 billion litres. The protesters also cited a planned "open‑air gym" on the lake's banks costing over €1 million of public funds and a municipal scheme called the “Parco Urbano della Conca del Lago” aimed at increasing commercial and recreational facilities.

A new Legambiente report, "Laghi sotto pressione 2026", confirms that both lakes have suffered severe water depletion, estimating a cumulative loss of over 45 million cubic metres in recent decades. The report notes a level drop of more than 6.5 m in Lake Albano, the spread of the cyanobacterium Planktothrix rubescens, and worsening ecological conditions due to excessive water abstraction, pollution and land‑use pressures.
