Italy's restaurant sector reaches €100 billion in consumption

Italian Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida highlighted the restaurant industry's role as a major economic driver during the Aigrim Day 2026 forum in Milan. He reported that consumption in the sector exceeds €100 billion, with an added value of €59.3 billion. Organized catering, represented by Aigrim, accounts for approximately €10 billion of this total.

Lollobrigida emphasized the sector's importance for employment and as a showcase for 'Made in Italy' excellence. He noted that government actions, such as the abolition of the 'Reddito di cittadinanza', have contributed to record employment levels in the country.

Complementary data from the Edenred FOOD 2026 Barometer indicates shifting consumer priorities among Italian workers. The survey reveals that 78% of Italians expect healthier food offerings from restaurants, while 83% expressed concern regarding food waste. Additionally, rising prices are influencing dining habits, with an increasing reliance on meal vouchers to maintain purchasing power.
