Italy's top 10% of families control over 60% of national wealth
Bank of Italy data for Q4 2025 shows that the richest 10 % of Italian households hold 60.6 % of total net wealth, while the poorest half possess just 7.2 %. Average net wealth per household rose slightly to €453 000 from €431 000 in 2024, and the wealth‑inequality index edged up to 72.2 from 71.5.
At a CNPR forum, politicians and experts warned that Italy’s middle class is increasingly impoverished, citing high costs for health, transport, education and housing, and a surge in youth emigration. They called for higher public investment, tax reforms aimed at the wealthiest, and policies to raise wages and curb precarious work.
The reports highlight a portfolio split: lower‑income families own mainly homes (≈74 %) and deposits (≈18 %), whereas richer families hold a more diversified mix of financial assets. Both sources suggest that fiscal and social‑policy measures are needed to address the growing disparity.
