Italy's unions call strikes at Pisa and Florence airports and Calabria retail sector
Italian trade unions CGIL, CISL, UIL and UGL announced a possible strike at the Pisa Galileo Galilei and Florence Amerigo Vespucci airports in September, citing increased passenger traffic, insufficient staffing, the introduction of automated Ryanair check‑in systems and inadequate infrastructure such as electric bus charging stations. Union representatives, including Fulvio Cacace of the Filt CGIL and Massimo Marino of UIL Toscana, demanded mediation from regional authorities.
Separately, the same union federations in Calabria – Filcams CGIL, Fisascat CISL and Uiltucs UIL – called for a full‑day strike on 15 August 2026 across the trade and modern distribution sector. The strike aims to keep commercial establishments closed on the public holiday, emphasizing workers’ right to rest and urging the regional president to support voluntary closures for social responsibility.
Both actions reflect growing labor tensions in Italy over working conditions, automation and work‑life balance.
