Ivaylo Mirchev Says Bulgaria Sends Mixed Signals Between West and Russia

Ivaylo Mirchev, co‑chair of the “Yes, Bulgaria” party, warned that Bulgaria is sending contradictory signals abroad – “with one foot towards the West and the other towards Russia.” He noted that the constitution requires a Consultative Council for National Security to meet at least every three months, a practice that is not being followed; President Rumen Radev held about nine meetings in his first term and only two in his second, one of them on vaping.

Mirchev argued that any significant geopolitical shift should trigger the council and pointed to recent energy deals, discussions about nuclear power, gas and oil as evidence of an eastward turn despite official rhetoric of Western alignment. He called the dual‑track policy “dishonest” toward voters and warned that the unstable foot pointing toward Russia is akin to “a sinking ship of Putin.” He also criticised the President’s push to sign the Kyiv declaration, calling it a “clear lie” and an example of the country’s double standards.
