Japan experiences multiple earthquakes in Iwate and Kumamoto

On August 9, 2026, multiple earthquakes were recorded across Japan. In the Iwate Prefecture coastal region, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 40 kilometers, registering a maximum intensity of 4. No tsunami threat was reported following this event.

In the Kyushu region, a magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck the Amakusa and Ashikita areas of Kumamoto Prefecture at a depth of 10 kilometers. This tremor reached a maximum intensity of 4 in Kamiamakusa, with shaking felt across Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Miyazaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, and Oita. No tsunami risk was associated with this quake.

These seismic events follow recent geological activity in Japan, including significant tremors in Kumamoto in late July.
