Izmir commemorates 205th anniversary of 1821 Mora Massacre

The Balkan Rumeli Turks Confederation (BRTK) and various non-governmental organizations in Izmir held a commemoration program at Gündoğdu Square to mark the 205th anniversary of the 1821 Mora Massacre. The event took place in front of the Greek Consulate, where participants carried Turkish flags and banners.

Participants emphasized the importance of preserving historical memory and passing these events down to future generations. Banners displayed at the site stated that 40,000 Turks lost their lives during the events of September 23, 1821. One prominent message carried by attendees was, “We have not forgotten the Mora massacre, we will not forget, we will not let it be forgotten.”

Mümin Durmuş, President of the Western Thrace Turks Association, and Özcan Pehlivanoğlu, Deputy Chairman of the Zafer Party responsible for NGOs, both provided statements during the program, highlighting the need to keep the historical suffering of Balkan and Rumelian Turks alive in public consciousness.
