Commemorations of the 1821 Mora Massacre

Overview

In late September 2026, various organizations in Turkey held commemorations to mark the 205th anniversary of the 1821 Mora Massacre.

In Izmir, the Balkan Rumeli Turks Confederation and several non-governmental organizations gathered at Gündoğdu Square. Participants held banners stating that 40,000 Turks lost their lives during the events and declared, “We have not forgotten the Mora massacre, we will not forget, we will not let it be forgotten.”

In Edirne, the Edirne Balkan Turks Federation placed a black wreath in front of the Greek Consulate to honor those killed in Tripoliçe during the Morea Revolt. During the ceremony, Ismail Kocaköse, General Secretary of the Balkan Rumeli Turks Confederation, called for Greece to confront historical realities regarding violence against civilians. The commemoration also included a painting exhibition and remarks from the Trakya University Balkan Research Institute regarding the impact of the violence on Muslim Albanians and the Jewish community.
