Izmir and Yenipazar lead mosquito control efforts as summer approaches

Mayor Malik Ercan of Yenipazar warned that mosquito and pest problems intensify in the summer and urged neighboring municipal leaders to carry out uninterrupted larvicide spraying. He emphasized that “mosquitoes and pests do not respect district borders” and called for collective action to protect residents' health and comfort.

The İzmir Metropolitan Municipality has launched a city‑wide programme targeting construction sites, which are major breeding grounds. Teams inspect foundations, basement levels, elevator shafts and any containers that collect water, applying biological larva treatments. Chemist Esranur Kaya explained that rising temperatures have shortened the egg‑to‑adult cycle to 7‑10 days, meaning a missed weekly check can trigger massive breeding. The municipality monitors active and idle sites across 30 districts, removes standing water, and demands site managers close or empty barrels, drums and other objects that hold rainwater. These measures aim to curb mosquito proliferation and protect public health throughout the hotter months.
