Izmir Municipality Uses Drones and Biological Methods to Combat Mosquitoes in Gediz Delta

Izmir Büyükşehir Belediyesi’s Vector Control Unit is fighting mosquito populations in the Gediz Delta Ramsar site without draining wetlands. Biological larvicides that target only mosquito larvae are being applied with drone technology to reach the extensive marshes while avoiding harm to the many bird, fish, reptile and plant species that inhabit the 40,000‑hectare ecosystem.

Buse Atik, head of the municipal Vector Control Unit, said the delta is “one of the most important wetlands in Turkey and Europe, home to flamingos and over 300 bird species.” Biologist Ali Eren emphasized that “the products we use affect only mosquito larvae; they have no adverse impact on birds, fish, insects or vegetation,” highlighting the ecological focus of the operation. The approach aims to protect public health and preserve the wetland’s biodiversity simultaneously.
