J. R. Smith arrested in Texas on assault charges
Former NBA player J. R. Smith was arrested in Hunt County, Texas, following a warrant issued by the Southlake Police Department. Smith faces a misdemeanor charge of “assault causing bodily injury family violence.”
According to a criminal complaint, Smith allegedly “intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly” caused bodily injury to a woman with whom he had a dating relationship or who was a member of his household. The filing alleges the incident involved Smith “hitting, grabbing or pushing” the woman with his hand.
Smith was taken into custody during a traffic stop in Royse City after an automatic license plate reader alerted officers to the active warrant. He was released from jail after posting a $5,000 bond. Smith’s attorney, Justin A. Moore, stated that his client is “presumed innocent” and intends to address the matter in court.
