Arrest of J. R. Smith in Texas

Overview

Former NBA player J. R. Smith was arrested in Hunt County, Texas, following a warrant issued by the Southlake Police Department. The arrest occurred during a traffic stop near Royse City after an automated license plate reader alerted officers to the active warrant.

Smith faces a misdemeanor charge of ‘assault causing bodily injury family violence.’ A criminal complaint alleges that Smith ‘intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly’ caused bodily injury to a woman with whom he had a dating relationship or who was a member of his household by ‘hitting, grabbing or pushing’ her with his hand.

After being taken into custody, Smith was released from the Hunt County Detention Center after posting a $5,000 bond. His attorney stated that Smith is ‘presumed innocent’ and intends to address the matter in court.
