Mississippi police: Tasia Fortune death was staged homicide in drug dispute

Investigators have determined that the August 3 death of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old woman found hanging from a tree in West Jackson, Mississippi, was a staged homicide rather than a racially motivated lynching.

According to court testimony from Jackson Police Detective Samuel Dukes, Fortune was killed elsewhere during a dispute involving missing illegal narcotics. Her body was subsequently placed in the tree to stage the scene. The investigation concluded the incident was a “drug case gone very wrong.”

Three men—Jarques Ratliff, 51, Earnest Lloyd Jr., 25, and Eric Clark, 45—have been arrested and charged with murder. Ratliff and Lloyd are being held without bond, while Clark surrendered to authorities. Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney stated that authorities expect further arrests and potential conspiracy charges.

The case had previously drawn significant national attention, with nearly 60 Democratic members of Congress calling for federal investigations under the Emmett Till Antilynching Act, citing concerns over racial violence.
