Citing the region’s history of racial terror murders and lynchings, local leaders have called for increased oversight. Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes formally requested assistance from U.S. Attorney Baxter Kruger, characterizing the death as a murder. The case has drawn significant community attention as the sixth instance this year of a Black person found hanging from a tree in the United States.

While the Jackson Police Department has not officially ruled the death a homicide, they have identified a person of interest who is currently being held on an unrelated charge. In a related development, Terence Anderson appeared in Jackson Municipal Court charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. During an interview with detectives, Anderson allegedly admitted to having an argument with Fortune prior to her death, though he denied any involvement in the incident. Police have urged the public to avoid speculation on social media to prevent interfering with the investigation.
