Three suspects charged in staged lynching of Tasia Fortune
Overview
In early August 2026, the body of 29-year-old Tasia Fortune, a mother of four and Kentucky native, was discovered hanging from a tree behind a vacant home in the Road of Remembrance neighborhood of Jackson, Mississippi. Following a medical examiner’s determination that the death was a homicide, Jackson police arrested 51-year-old Jacques Ratliff on September 11, 2026. Ratliff pleaded not guilty to murder on September 14, and a judge denied him bond. During court proceedings, Ratliff stated that he and Fortune were friends. On September 23, 2026, authorities announced the arrest of a second suspect, 25-year-old Earnest Lloyd Jr., who has been charged with murder. Investigators allege that Lloyd had a physical altercation with Fortune shortly before her death and used a black cable cord to hang her. On September 25, 2026, police confirmed that a third individual, 45-year-old Eric Clark, has turned himself in and faces murder charges. A municipal judge subsequently set Clark’s bond at $5 million. During court testimony, Detective Samuel Dukes stated that the medical examiner’s findings suggest Fortune was deceased prior to being hanged, leading investigators to conclude the hanging was a ‘staged’ lynching. Dukes testified that Fortune was likely killed in a different location following a drug dispute before being moved to the site in west Jackson. Investigators noted that Fortune ‘fought hard’ before she was killed. Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney stated that authorities expect further arrests and potential conspiracy charges. The case drew national attention and political scrutiny, with nearly 60 Democratic members of Congress, led by Representative Ayanna Pressley, sending a letter to the Attorney General and the FBI Director calling for federal investigations under the 2022 Emmett Till Antilynching Act.
