Jacob Grandison returns to basketball after doping suspension

Finnish national basketball player Jacob Grandison has returned to professional play following a three-month suspension caused by a doping violation. The incident stemmed from Grandison’s use of Adderall, a medication containing amphetamine used to treat ADHD, for which he did not hold a required therapeutic use exemption (TUE) during the European Championships.

Grandison stated that he had informed the national team medical staff of his medication since joining the team in 2021. However, the Finnish Basketball Association failed to apply for the necessary exemption. Henrik Dettmann, the association’s head of coaching, acknowledged that while the team was aware of the medication, the exemption process was not completed. Dettmann has taken full responsibility for the administrative failure and pledged to improve internal processes.

While the player faced scrutiny following a positive test during a match against Lithuania, the investigation revealed the violation was due to administrative oversight rather than intentional cheating. Grandison has since obtained the required exemption.
