Jacobo Rodríguez discusses border cooperation and SIMAS financial recovery
Jacobo Rodríguez, the mayor of Piedras Negras, has highlighted the financial turnaround of the Municipal Water and Sanitation System (SIMAS). The organization transitioned from a 7 million MXN loss in 2024 to an 18 million MXN profit in 2026. To address growing urban demand, officials are planning infrastructure expansions for 2027, including the rehabilitation of a water treatment plant to increase capacity by 250 liters per second.
Additionally, Rodríguez emphasized the need for stronger coordination among border mayors from Mexico and the United States. Following a summit involving representatives from California and cities like Tijuana, Rodríguez argued that local governments must unite to manage infrastructure and commercial transit more effectively. He noted that federal authorities in Washington and Mexico City are often disconnected from the daily realities of border life, necessitating direct binational dialogue with authorities in Eagle Pass and Customs and Border Protection.
