Local governance and infrastructure in Piedras Negras

Overview

In Piedras Negras, Mayor Jacobo Rodríguez reported a financial recovery for the Municipal Water and Sanitation System (SIMAS), noting a shift from a 7 million MXN loss in 2024 to an 18 million MXN profit in 2026. To meet urban demand, officials are planning infrastructure expansions for 2027, including the rehabilitation of a water treatment plant to increase capacity by 250 liters per second.

Rodríguez also called for increased binational coordination between Mexican and United States border mayors to manage infrastructure and commercial transit. He suggested that local governments must engage in direct dialogue with authorities in Eagle Pass and Customs and Border Protection to address realities that federal authorities in Washington and Mexico City may overlook.

Additionally, local deputy Guillermo “Memo” Ruiz Guerra has launched a reforestation campaign in Piedras Negras, aiming to plant over 1,000 trees at various educational institutions throughout November to promote environmental awareness.
