Jaguar pivots to ultra-luxury electric vehicle market
Jaguar is undergoing a radical brand transformation, pivoting from a high-volume manufacturer to an ultra-luxury electric vehicle brand. To facilitate this shift, the company has discontinued its entire existing lineup, including sedans and the I-Pace, to focus on high-margin, low-volume models.
Managing Director Rawdon Glover stated that the previous business model was unsustainable against German premium rivals. The brand aims to target the ultra-wealthy demographic rather than seeking mass-market recognition. Data regarding interest in the upcoming Type 01 flagship EV suggests the strategy is working as intended; approximately 75% to 80% of the 50,000 prospective customers expressing interest are entirely new to the brand, rather than existing Jaguar owners.
The Type 01 is a high-performance four-door grand tourer built on the Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA). It features a tri-motor setup producing over 1,000 hp and is expected to sit in a high price bracket, potentially between 20 and 30 million yen.
