Jair Bolsonaro's AI video and family legal battles dominate Brazil's political scene
An artificial‑intelligence‑generated video featuring Jair Bolsonaro’s image and voice was shown at the Liberal Party (PL) convention in Santa Catarina on 1 August 2026, promoting his son Flávio Bolsonaro’s presidential campaign. Jair Bolsonaro denied authorising the use of his likeness, and Brazil’s Supreme Court opened an investigation into whether the video violates the law that bars the former president from public communications while under humanitarian house arrest.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes warned that any consent to the AI video could constitute a serious breach of Bolsonaro’s house‑arrest conditions and might lead to revocation of his humanitarian measure. Earlier, Moraes had suspended all visits to Bolsonaro for a month and barred Flávio Bolsonaro from visiting for 90 days after a handwritten‑letter violation.
Moraes also granted a temporary exception allowing Geovanna Kathleen Ferreira Lima, the sister‑in‑law of former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro, to enter the residence where Jair Bolsonaro serves his sentence, should Michelle require hospitalization for recurrent migraine crises. Michelle Bolsonaro posted a photo from the hospital confirming the exams and later announced her candidacy for a Senate seat representing the Federal District under the PL banner.
