Brazil: Moraes revokes Vasques' retirement and restores Bolsonaro's family visits FAST-MOVING

Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has issued several significant rulings regarding the legal consequences of the 2022 coup attempt investigations in Brazil.

First, Moraes ordered the revocation of Silvinei Vasques's retirement from the Federal Highway Police. Vasques, a former director of the agency, was previously sentenced to 24 years and 6 months in prison for his role in the coup plot, which included using police structures to obstruct voters during the 2022 elections. Vasques was apprehended in Paraguay while attempting to flee to El Salvador using a fraudulent passport.

In a separate decision, Moraes authorized Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently under house arrest, to resume receiving visits from his sons, Carlos and Jair Renan. This follows a 30-day suspension of family visits triggered by a breach of precautionary measures. However, the authorization explicitly prohibits these visits from having political or electoral purposes. Senator Flávio Bolsonaro remains prohibited from visiting his father for a 90-day period following a similar violation.

Moraes also addressed the impact of technology on democracy, warning that candidates using Artificial Intelligence to spread disinformation during the final stages of elections could face disqualification.
