Eduardo Bolsonaro ordered arrested and passports canceled by Brazilian Supreme Court

Brazilian Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has ordered the immediate arrest of former federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro. The order follows the finalization of a conviction for coercion during legal proceedings, a case in which the court found Eduardo Bolsonaro had coordinated with the United States government to seek economic sanctions and visa revocations against Brazilian authorities to interfere with the investigation into his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Eduardo Bolsonaro was sentenced to four years and two months in a semi-open prison regime. The ruling also mandates the cancellation of all Brazilian passports issued in his name and the suspension of his political rights for the duration of the sentence. Additionally, the court ordered the loss of his position as a Federal Police clerk.

The decision comes amid a high-stakes political environment, with presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro criticizing the move as an attempt to interfere in the upcoming runoff election. Eduardo Bolsonaro, who currently resides in the United States, has denounced the decision as arbitrary and politically motivated. While an arrest warrant has been issued and included in the National Prison Monitoring Bank, the practical execution of the sentence remains uncertain due to his residence in the U.S.
