Jair Bolsonaro's house arrest ends Thursday as STF reviews health and pistol case

The 90‑day humanitarian house arrest granted to former president Jair Bolsonaro expires on Thursday, 25 June. Minister Alexandre de Moraes of Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court will decide whether to extend the measure or return Bolsonaro to the Papuda penitentiary. The restriction, imposed in March while Bolsonaro recovered from broncopneumonia, includes an electronic ankle monitor, a ban on phones and social media, and limited visits.

Medical reports submitted to the court note cardiovascular stability and improved lung condition, but record persistent fatigue, balance issues and frequent hiccup episodes, for which medication has been increased. Bolsonaro’s defence has asked for additional exams, including chest and abdominal CT scans and gastrointestinal endoscopy, to monitor his condition.

Separately, the Federal Civil Police are investigating a Glock 9 mm pistol registered to Bolsonaro that was seized during a police blitz in Taguatinga. The weapon was found with a security agent from the President’s Institutional Security Office, who says the gun was handed to him for technical repair and that the firing pin was removed because of concerns about the president’s psychiatric medication. Moraes authorized a face‑to‑face testimony from Bolsonaro on 23 June at his residence and allowed his lawyers to be present during the interview.

Lawmaker Lindbergh Farias has reiterated calls to revoke the house arrest, arguing that the security team’s obstruction of a prior police summons demonstrates non‑compliance with the custodial order.
