Jakarta Barat police arrest mother and child for attempted ATM robbery

A mother and her child have been arrested by the Jakarta Barat Police following an attempted ATM robbery at a minimarket in the Kapuk Raya area of Cengkareng. The crime, which was reported in February 2026, involved a family conspiracy including the child's stepfather.

According to police, the group attempted to breach the ATM using welding equipment. However, the operation failed when their oxygen supply ran out before they could damage the machine. Following the failed robbery, the suspects reportedly stole cigarettes from the minimarket instead.

The child revealed that the stepfather, who is currently a fugitive, had taught them how to weld under the guise of legitimate work. The mother, who is the primary breadwinner for her seven children, stated she was hesitant to use the welding tools due to fear and lack of skill. Police identified the stepfather as the mastermind behind the planned crime.
