Jakarta expands e-waste collection through school movement

The Jakarta Provincial Government is expanding its electronic waste management through the ‘E-Waste School Movement’ program. Initiated by the community organization EwasteRJ in collaboration with the Jakarta Environmental Agency and the Education Agency, the initiative officially launched at SMAN 68 Jakarta on September 22, 2026.

The program aims to increase public awareness regarding waste sorting and broaden access to collection facilities. It will initially roll out to the city’s 441 Adiwiyata-certified schools before expanding to the approximately 9,000 schools across Jakarta. Participating schools will be provided with designated drop boxes for electronic waste.

Collected items will be transported to specialized processing facilities. Transport schedules will be determined by either a set timetable or when a drop box reaches capacity. Officials hope the initiative will encourage students to bring electronic waste from their homes, thereby extending the impact of the program to their families.
