E-waste management initiatives in Indonesia
Overview
In September 2026, new electronic waste (e-waste) management initiatives were launched in Indonesia through both corporate and governmental channels.
PT XLSMART Telecom Sejahtera Tbk, in partnership with REMIND, introduced the #ByeByeBox Campus Roadshow at the Institut Teknologi Bandung. This program utilizes Indonesia’s first E-Waste Reverse Vending Machine, which employs artificial intelligence and cameras to scan, weigh, and record small electronic devices for material recovery. The initial phase aims to collect 600 kilograms of e-waste by November 2026.
Simultaneously, the Jakarta Provincial Government launched the ‘E-Waste School Movement’ at SMAN 68 Jakarta. This collaboration between the Jakarta Environmental Agency, the Education Agency, and the organization EwasteRJ seeks to expand collection access by providing designated drop boxes to schools. The program will initially target 441 Adiwiyata-certified schools before potentially expanding to approximately 9,000 schools across the city.
