Jakarta faces soaring temperatures, driving surge in air‑conditioner demand and health warnings

Jakarta is set to experience unusually high temperatures through September 2026 as the sun’s peak position moves directly over Java, extending the dry season and reducing humidity, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). The agency warned that the prolonged heat could increase cases of heat stroke, especially among outdoor workers, and advised the public to stay hydrated, wear loose clothing and avoid strenuous activity.

The hotter climate is also boosting demand for cooling equipment. Experts note that rising global temperatures are prompting a rapid expansion of Indonesia’s air‑conditioner market, with offices consuming up to 30‑50 % of building electricity for cooling and hotels up to 40‑60 %. Data centres, powered by the growth of artificial‑intelligence services, represent a new major load on the power grid. The increased electricity use is expected to raise emissions, creating a feedback loop that could further accelerate warming.
