President Prabowo Subianto signs revised Indonesian Police Law

President Prabowo Subianto officially signed Law No. 5/2026 on 17 June 2026, revising the 2002 Police Law. The amendment raises the retirement age for rank‑and‑file officers to a maximum of 59 years and allows senior officers up to 60 years, with the possibility of a one‑year extension for four‑star generals by presidential decree. It expands the mandate of the National Police Commission (Kompolnas), giving it advisory duties on policy direction, recruitment, integrity, and public complaints. The law also permits disabled citizens to become police officers if they meet competency requirements, and adds new police responsibilities such as cyber‑crime response, protection of vital national assets, and cooperation with other ministries. Additional provisions introduce internal oversight mechanisms, modernise police education with human‑rights and democratic content, and allow police personnel to hold positions in ministries without resigning from the force.
