Jakarta mirror vendor dies after assault during Pejompongan riots
A mirror vendor, 59-year-old Bambang Setiyawan, died following a violent assault in the Pejompongan area of Central Jakarta during riots following a demonstration near the DPR RI Building on Thursday night, August 27, 2026.
Witnesses and video footage indicate the victim was dragged into the street and struck with sticks. While the victim was evacuated to Mintohardjo Hospital, he was later pronounced dead. The Polda Metro Jaya stated that evacuation was delayed due to the volatile security situation at the scene.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung visited the victim's family to offer condolences and announced that the Jakarta Provincial Government would cover all funeral and burial expenses.
Police have requested an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, but the victim's family has formally refused the procedure. The investigation into the identity of the perpetrators and their motives remains ongoing.
